The origin of the Puneri pagadi dates back to the 17th century when there were 12 classes of people. Among them were the 'Kostis', who on fortnightly visits made the pagadis at people's homes.
For making the pagadis, the fabric used was mostly cotton which was dipped in water and starch was added to fix its folds permanently.
